Does love wear out?
That question has haunted me throughout my relationships. In my experience, it does—and I wouldn’t know how to keep it from wearing out. There’s a song in Spanish that says, "Se nos rompió el amor de tanto usarlo" (“Our love broke from using it so much”), and I believe that’s true. Love breaks. But what happens when love never truly materializes?
Is it spared that wear and tear?
Does it survive in the hearts of those who feel it?
Is it stronger when it never has to face the everyday? Is it real then?
This poem explores those questions.
It speaks of a love that never happened—or only happened briefly.
Blindreaming
I hear the music coming from your fingers, Softly caressing the keys as if they were pillows Surrounding the dreams of my lifetime. I’ve loved you since that very first time You were ten, or nine, and I was already seventeen. Since that day you mistook me for a mermaid, And I imagined you inside that ray of moonlight, Showering the ocean through a hole in the clouds. Time flew during that night, And now you’re old, grey— your face has changed. But I can still smell the only kiss I’ve ever felt, The only touch of those brown hands, The once-impossible lips I tasted. I’m relieved we never ruined it We never took it for a trip or a dance. I tied my memories together in a knot And kept them safe from the daily wear and tear. I will keep blindreaming Until I find you in another life, Knowing that in this one, Only the ethereal melody of that one kiss will be mine. Arnaly Arriaga Blanco - April 7, 2025
Welcome to my suitcase of memories and creativity. I’m Arnaly, a citizen of many places, and I want to share my experiences growing up in Venezuela, as well as my fun experiments in creative writing.
I became a writer the day I realized there was no more space for thoughts in my head, and I needed to set them free. I write both fiction and non-fiction: in "La Maleta de Arnaly," I share my personal stories, and in the section "Life Wayfaring," I write hybrid stories, allowing my imagination to roam free and blend with reality. I am a fan of Magic Realism and love to use it in my stories. In the section “The Un-Poet”, I express my feelings in the shape of, hopefully, poetry. In my newest section, “The Typewriter,” I am journaling my experience as an aspiring writer.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you can join me on my journey as I traverse the world and take you with me through my stories.
My posts are all free, but if you would like to help me write more, buy me a coffee on the link below. It is much appreciated:

thank you for turning unanswered love into such gentle music
A new word and a deep question, somehow reminding me of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now." As always, you've expressed beautifully about a moment from long ago but that is still present. Love it! Love ya!!!
